6 Creative Wedding Place Card Ideas

Feeling Stuck On Your Place Card Design? Here Are 6 Ideas To Wow Your Guests

For those planning a wedding, no detail is too small—even the details that actually are small, such as place cards. Though their purpose is practical, they can also be beautiful works of art that attendees will keep as treasured mementos. They’re as important to the tablescape as dishware, centerpieces and floral bouquets. The only hard-and-fast rule with place cards is that they need to direct people where to sit and not get in the way of the meal. Additionally, consider these two aspects: the wedding place card itself, and how it will be displayed. Other than that, you can let your imagination run wild! We partnered with shopPOPdisplays to come up with a few creative wedding place card ideas to get you started:

Natural elements

Twigs, sea shells, leaves, wildflowers and other natural elements make lovely, textural additions to the place card. String them on jute or hemp if they lend themselves to that. If not, wrap the material around the card and tuck the natural bit into it. A glue gun will come in handy, too. Larger elements such as driftwood or stones can be the base of the design in and of themselves.

Textural layering

Different colors and weights of card stock and art paper can be torn, frayed, distressed and layered to interesting effect. Fabrics and lace can be treated the same way. Layered materials with clean edges also lend themselves to a variety of styles, too. Consider those for a mid-century vibe or a more formal look. Mix in boho designs in for a well-traveled vibe. If you want to prop up the finished version, one way to do so is with clear or colored acrylic card holders.

Photographs can add a sense of place, moment of nostalgia or bit of whimsey to a place card. If you want to focus on the bride and groom, consider images of places that are special to them. Ask attendees to send in photos of themselves as children for a nostalgic touch. Silly photos of the couple, or even images of their pets, can add some casual fun to the space. Choose full color, Kodachrome, saturated, sepia, black and white, or other photo treatments to the support the theme.

Vessels

Wedding place cards can be tied to vessels or situated atop them in a simple wire card holder. There are an infinite variety of vessels, so finding one to suit a particular theme should be fairly easy. A small, clear glass bud vase, an antique medicine bottle, a tiny plant in a pot or miniature birdcages. Truly, the list is endless.

Ditch the card altogether

If you can write or etch on it, it can serve as a wedding place card. River stones, large leaves or pieces of sanded wood are perfect for eco-friendly themes. Dog and cat lovers can etch attendees’ names on tags. For a formal feel, consider etching names on clear acrylic blocks or cylinders.

Use the chair, not the table

Any of these treatments lend themselves to wedding place cards that are dangled from the back of chairs, too. Just be sure to use a complementary material to do so. For instance, use thin rope or braided raffia for place cards that incorporate natural elements. Delicate chains or wire shapes can be wrapped around the around the neck of a bottle for an industrial-chic vibe. Strips of frayed, knotted fabric work well in a casual setting, or use tulle or linen in a more formal one.
