Although, I know that not everyone can afford a wedding planner which is why I wanted to share my expertise and give you insight into the wedding planning checklist that every engaged couple needs.
All things considered, I know that planning a wedding can quickly go from exciting to overwhelming. Obviously, between budgets, vendors, timelines, and guest lists, it’s easy to feel like you’re forgetting something important.

12+ Months Before Your Wedding
Start with the big-picture decisions:
- Set your wedding budget (this is key so you know how many people you can afford to invite)
- Make a guest list (key before finding a venue to make sure everyone fits)
- Book your venue and choose a date
- Hire your planner and photographer
- Start gathering inspiration for design
Planner Tip:
The best venues and photographers book up FAST, especially during peak season.
9–12 Months Before the Big Day
However, now it’s time to build your vendor team.
Focus on booking:
- Caterer/Bartending
- DJ or band
- Florist
- Videographer
- Hair and makeup
- Transportation
- Rentals
- Desserts
You should also:
- Start dress shopping
- Build your wedding website
- Take engagement photos
- Send Save the Dates
6–8 Months Before the Wedding
At this point, this is when organization becomes really important.
Prioritize:
- Wedding party attire
- Invitations
- Transportation
- Honeymoon planning
- Drafting your wedding day timeline
- Layouts for your wedding
Basically, one of the biggest mistakes couples make is waiting too long to create a realistic timeline. Your timeline impacts everything from photos to guest experience.
2–4 Months Before the Wedding
Now you’re in logistics and details mode.
Focus on:
- Sending invitations
- Finalizing rentals
- Creating family photo lists
- Confirming vendor details
- Scheduling final dress fittings
- Getting all key paperwork in place
- Confirming all logistics and layouts
Planner Tip:
Remember, always build extra buffer time into your timeline. Things almost always take longer than expected.
1 Month Before Your Wedding
At last, you’re almost there.
Final tasks before your wedding day:
- Finalize seating chart
- Confirm all final invoices and payments
- Pack emergency kit
- Pack all attire
- Review your final timeline and send it out to vendors
- Confirm final guest count and that all vendors have final details and counts
