Hello!
I’m Paige, the owner of HUE, an LA based design company. Our mission is to create hand-made happiness. Which we do that through a couple different mediums. Fonts and words are a love of ours and since we are nearing a day that uses many a word to celebrate love I thought I would share with you a story.
The first sign I ever sold said, “If I know what love is, it is because of you.” I was in high school and I had found the quote on the internet. It seemed sappy and true enough that someone would want those words hanging on their wall. I had never been in love. Even as an angsty teenager I knew love was important. I knew I loved Chuck Taylor Converse and I loved anytime someone let me be on stage. I loved my family and was loved by them. But these words started a journey for me I didn’t really sign up for [pun intended]. I have been painting words on signs for over 10 years now. Words matter. Love matters.
Creating word-art, as I do, forces me to really see every word and count it all as important. No letter gets put on the sign unless I physically paint it and if that is not intention, I don’t know what is. So with Valentine’s Day nearing, what better way to be intentional than with some words. A DIY project where you’ll need to put some brain power and potentially some emotion into your creation.
Stuff you need:
Watercolors
Watercolor paper
ink pen
a little love to share
Watercolor is such a fun medium to play around with. Start with watercolor paper and decide the shape you want to be backdrop for your words. With no paint, only water, paint your shape.
Then drop paint into your shape. The more water the further the paint will travel. If you want a more opaque color, use less water. For a softer color, more water. Pick a color palette, colors that will play well together and look good blended. Though your loved ones should appreciate whatever you make [that’s their job right?] mixing too many colors will just result in muddy brown. You’ve been warned.
Feel free to add a little more texture and spread the love outside of the designated area.
Final step is your word[s]. This is your card so you get full creative rights to say everything or anything you want for Valentine’s Day. Hallmark isn’t producing this card, so fill it with inside jokes, that thing you’ve been waiting to say or something you wouldn’t necessarily send to your mom.
Happy Valentine’s Day!! I hope it is full of words that hit your soul and reminds you of the beauty of the people you are near.
