Ways To Celebrate Thanksgiving When You Can’t Gather

How To Keep The Spirit of Thanksgiving Alive This Year

As someone with family across the country, I know how difficult this holiday season can be. It’s particularly disappointing that Thanksgiving is the holiday of gathering, yet we are encouraged not to, for the safety of others and ourselves. To help make this holiday season a little easier, here are a few ideas of ways to celebrate Thanksgiving when you can’t gather.

Virtual Feast

If there’s one thing that’s come out of this crazy year, it’s that technology has helped to bring us closer than ever before! Invite your friends and family to a virtual feast this Thanksgiving where you can hang out and talk, as if they were in the room with you. There are a myriad of video chat apps and programs now that you can use.  You can play music, games, and play trivia virtually!

Dine Outdoors

Depending on where you live, you can try hosting Thanksgiving outdoors. It’s been shown that staying distanced and outdoors are some of the safest ways to see others right now. Renting a few heaters and supplying some blankets will do wonders to keep things cozy for you and your guests. And instead of a buffet of food, pre-set plates with a little of everything for guests to enjoy.

Participate In A Gratitude Challenge

During the month of November, ask your friends and family to do a gratitude challenge. Each day, share something you’re grateful for all month long. You can start at anytime, and just build from there. Whether it’s a group text, email or phone call. Get everyone to talk and share about what they’re thankful for this holiday season to keep your spirits and connection high. (You can check out some of the ways Team FA practices gratitude here.)

Thanksgiving recipe exchange

Have A Pot Luck/Recipe Exchange

Do you have a famous family recipe that you look forward to sharing every year? You don’t have to stop this year! Try cooking a large batch and packing it up to deliver to your friends and family. You could even all (safely) deliver a dish to complete you entire Thanksgiving meal!

Volunteer

The holiday season is a busy time for volunteers, and this year there’s an extra need of helping hands. So many people have been negatively affected by the pandemic, and they need all the love + support they can get. If you are looking to give back, check out this list of ways you can volunteer in your community safely this year.

“Host” A Family

This year, more so than any other, has been extremely difficult for some families. Unfortunately, some have struggled to afford any food, let alone a Thanksgiving dinner. Therefore, if you have the means, consider hosting a family where you cook and deliver an entire Thanksgiving meal for them. It will be a huge relief to those in need.

No matter where you find yourself this Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you stay strong, safe + healthy, friends! Hi, I'm Kari.
Wedding Planner, Podcaster, & Creative Entrepreneur.

The founder and lead planner behind Feathered Arrow Studio. Over the past 11 years, I’ve designed and executed more than 175 weddings throughout Southern California, helping couples create celebrations that feel deeply personal and beautiful.

My approach blends thoughtful design with genuine hospitality. I care deeply about how a wedding feels not just how it looks. I want every detail to be intentional and every guest to feel taken care of. Together we take your inspiration, your story, and your priorities and turn them into a celebration that feels effortless, welcoming, and unmistakably yours.

Not every couple needs full-service planning, which is why I also offer wedding consults and planning guides for those navigating the process on their own. I’m also the co-host of Just Another Biz Podcast, where we have honest conversations about the wedding industry with fellow creatives behind the scenes.
